At our school we use both the Oxford Reading Tree scheme of books which are levelled in sixteen stages as well as a wide variety of 'real' books to match the children's reading ability all the way from early reading in Reception right up to the end of Year 6, including high ability readers.

The early stages of the scheme start by encouraging the children to remember and tell stories. From here, the children progress on to using letter sounds (phonics) to sound out words and recognise common words on sight. As the children move up the scheme, the books become longer and involve more complex plot lines.

We have a range of books match to each level. These are texts from a range of other sources that match the children's reading ability, but give the children a chance to read texts by different authors and to develop and extend their vocabulary.

Oxford also has a website for parents/carers to access which contains free e-books and apps to help parents support with their child's reading development: http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk

We also use Bug Club to give our children access to a variety of levelled reading texts online through individual accounts.
